Alcohol sales almost 40 per cent higher than last year

Sales of take-home alcohol have surged during the pandemic, with sales almost 40 per cent higher than the same period last year, figures from Nielson show.

158 million was spent on off-trade alcohol in the four weeks leading up to April 5th.

Sales of wine increased by 34 per cent in the period, while stout had the biggest percentage growth with sales growing more than 80 percent.

Lager saw a 51 per cent increase, while sales of whiskey rose by 42 per cent.

Off-licences saw the biggest share of the increases, with sale growing about per cent, but supermarkets and discount stores like Aldi and Lidl didn’t miss out, making up the bulk of alcohol sales in Ireland.
