Crispy Rolls UK ONLY Is Not OK Here, says CSNA
CSNA has expressed disappointment that the very successful Milky Way Crispy Roll product from the Mars stable will only be available in the UK – and not Ireland. Despite its success from a sales perspective, the manufacturer ceased production in 2022 and its availability in shops in both Ireland and the UK dried up.
However, CSNA reported that trade magazines in the UK began receiving Press Releases from Mars announcing that not only were the Milky Way Crispy Roll being reintroduced, it was being accompanied by 2 more Crispy Rolls, a Twix and a Bounty. Many of the multiples were jockeying for position of how low they could go with combined purchases and bundled promotions.
Irish and EU legislation has identified a problem with some of the ingredients that are listed as present in these products , and those in FSAI who are charged with ensuring there is compliance on composite ingredients as per EU 2021/405 have been asked to rule on whether the presence of these imports from the UK, and clearly marked “UK ONLY” is in contravention of post-Brexit trade rules.
Retailers need to be aware that ignorance of the law is rarely an acceptable defence if such a notice is on the product you are selling, CSNA told its members.
