Applegreen Lisburn wins International award

Applegreen’s Lisburn Motorway Service Area has been conferred a major international award.

The site took home the top prize of International Convenience Retailer of the Year at the prestigious 2016 International Convenience Retail Awards, held in London on June 9.

The awards are organised by the US based National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS), which represents 150,000 forecourts in the States.

The Lisburn site, situated on the M1 south of Belfast in Northern Ireland, was opened in March, and is the group’s 11th motorway services and second in NI.

It opened to a huge media frenzy after interest in the site among commuters caused tailbacks on its opening day.

The site reflects the latest design concept developed by Applegreen, including an executive lounge on the mezzanine floor along with six food offers.

Receiving the award on behalf of Applegreen, Joe Barrett, chief operations officer, said:  “It is exceptionally gratifying to receive such a prestigious award from our industry. The Applegreen brand and customer proposition is constantly evolving to meet the demands of consumers. Our focus is to bring as many new initiatives to the forecourt market to make life easier for customers, and being announced as International Convenience Retailer of the Year is testament to that ongoing focus.”

The International Convenience Retail Awards are now in their eighth year, promoting global convenience retailing standards.

The judges said Applegreen’s new M1 Lisburn site displayed “excellent and effective” use of space, as well as a quality mix of proprietary and branded food concepts.

This is the second Applegreen location to receive such an award with the brand’s Mount Merrion site in Co Dublin site earning the title in 2010.

Applegreen plc is a major forecourt retailer in the Republic of Ireland with a growing presence in the United Kingdom.
