Gardaí Get Tough On Crime – Images will be posted on the force’s website and social media channels.

Dublin Gardaí will ask the public to identify the individuals whose images will be posted on the force’s website and social media channels.

Assistant commissioner for Dublin Paul Cleary, stated: “The move was part of a wider operation to address organized shoplifting on the streets of the capital and protect retailers.

“We will be releasing both images and CCTV footage of people who are committing these types of crimes but haven’t yet been identified, in the hope that either the members of the public will identify them or they’ll come forward themselves.

“I hope this will also act as a big deterrent for anyone thinking of stealing from shops,” he said.

“We are adopting a pro-arrest policy for this type of crime.”

CSNA has welcomed the direction that Assistant Commissioner for Dublin Paul Cleary has indicated on sharing images of shoplifters to curb retail crime. “We would, however remind members that we need to be permitted to share images of known troublemakers with both the gardaí and other shopkeepers. This is currently frowned upon by the data protection commissioner who seems to form the opinion that protecting criminals and their right to anonymity is more important than having a just and fair society. Nevertheless, we commend AC Cleary for this initiative” said CEO Vincent Jennings.
