Irish retail sales growth accelerates to 3.9% annually in December

Annual growth in Irish retail sales volumes accelerated last month, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office on Monday.

On a monthly basis, the volume of Irish retail sales increased by 0.9% in December, after seeing a 0.2% rise in November.

Annually, retail sales volumes were 3.9% ahead of December 2022, accelerating from 0.8% annual growth in November.

Excluding motor trades, volumes rose by 0.3% in December from November, and by 1.8% from the prior year.

The largest monthly increases were in motor trades, up 5.2%; other retail sales, up 2.7%; and clothing, footwear and textiles, up 2.1%. By contrast, the biggest decreases were in books, newspapers and stationery, down 2.8%; food, beverages and tobacco, down 1.4%; and furniture and lighting, down 0.8%.
