Government Announced Radical Overhaul of Minimum Wage Setting Process
Following Budget 2027, the Government came under criticism for agreeing to the 79c NMW increase. RGDATA voiced members’ frustration at yet another cost increase.

As a consequence of pressure from RGDATA and other business groups, Enterprise Minister Burke has scrapped the Government’s 2029 target for introducing the Living Wage, currently calculated at €16 per hour. The Government has also directed the Low Pay Commission to take a more cautious approach to future NMW increases, taking account of wider economic conditions and competition.

RGDATA welcomes these new commitments, which reflect concerns we have repeatedly raised about rising employment costs. However, the orgaisation says they offer no relief to retailers facing a further 79c NMW increase in January. We will continue to push for immediate support, particularly on employer PRSI relief and energy supports.
