The latest data from Kantar shows that food inflation in Ireland has fallen to 2.9% in the 12 weeks to 14 April 2024 – down by 12.9 percentage points, compared to April last .

Volumes per trip increased slightly, by 0.4%, as did store visits (1%), with shoppers making, on average, 21.5 trips in the month of April.

The average price per pack grew marginally this month, by 0.7%.

Although value sales are up for April, this was mainly driven by grocery price inflation, rather than increased purchasing.

Within the Irish grocery market, Dunnes Stores still holds the highest market share, at 23.9%, with year-on-year growth of 8% -slightly below last month, when it held 24% of the market.

Tesco follows, with 23% of the market – up by 7.6%, year on year.

SuperValu holds 20.4% of the market and growth of 3.5%. SuperValu’s shoppers  make the most frequent in-store trips, with an average amount of 21.8.

SuperValu also has the strongest growth in volume per trip among Irish retailers – up by 5.8% – contributing an additional €37.4 million to its overall performance.

Lidl holds a 13.6% share, with year-on-year growth of 6.4%.

More frequent trips added €33 million to its overall performance.

Aldo holds 12.1% of the market and a year-on-year decline of 0.6%.

New shoppers and more frequent trips contributed an additional €8.4 million to the discounter’s overall performance.

Tesco Ireland plans to spend €80 million this year on eight new store openings, extensive refits and refurbishment upgrades. The  investment will be used to open new Express stores, carry out significant upgrade projects for 50 stores, and for maintenance across the store network.

The news comes as Tesco Ireland gets set to open its 167th store on Scholarstown Road, at Two Oaks, Rathfarnham, in South Dublin on 7 September. Three more Express stores will open in Dublin by the end of the year, as well as other stores in Cork and Waterford.

Geoff Byrne, chief operating office, Tesco Ireland, said, “We have an ambitious development strategy for the business and are very excited to be expanding our Tesco Express model.

“We remain as committed as ever to delivering a rewarding shopping experience for our customers, which offers real value,” he added.

The Tesco Express model is proving very successful in urban settings and reflects evolving consumer demand for greater convenient shopping opportunities in high footfall areas.

Retailers to ‘come out fighting’ after Tesco’s pledge to cut more than 700 grocery items, a report in the Irish Times has claimed. The move is likely to put pressure on other supermarket chains to follow suit, leading to significant savings for Irish consumers.

How will this impact the convenience sector? The mantra ‘less is more’ may apply here – as more consumers opt for smaller shops more often to save on costs, by only purchasinf what they need, when they need it – rather than the over-rated weekly ‘big shop.’

Ireland’s other supermarkets could follow Tesco’s lead in reducing the price of hundreds of products or risk losing market share, a retail analyst has suggested to the Irish Times, bringing on a ‘price war’ scenario.

Tesco said it has cut the price of more than 700 products with the price cuts averaging 10 per cent and including both own-brand products and branded products covering grocery staples as well as household and health and beauty products.

A 10 per cent cut in the cost of a weekly shop would amount to savings of more than €500 when spread out over the course of a year and if it is replicated by Dunnes Stores, SuperValu, Lidl and Aldi, it could have a significant impact on household budgets as well as pushing food inflation lower.

Tesco Ireland’s commercial director Joe Manning told the Irish Times that  the discounts were applied to “a hugely diverse range of items including grocery staples [and] household products”.

Meanwhile Kantar says the relentless rise of small FMCG brands has sent a warning to industry giants. However, astute big players perceive this signal differently – it’s an invitation to embark on a strategic shopping spree.

As cash-strapped consumers embrace the allure of alternative options, these emerging brands are seizing the spotlight, steadily gaining ground. What’s intriguing is that many of these up-and-comers have become targets on the very “shopping list” they’ve disrupted.

Tesco Ireland has renewed its commitment to help customers spend less. The company’s new-year campaign – ‘Spend Less at Tesco’ – includes a price lock on hudnreds of items, which will last until Easter.

Cathal Deavy, customer director, Tesco Ireland, said, “We know that customers are continuing to keep a close eye on their budgets, and we are doing everything we can to help them to spend less, every day.

“As we start the new year, our spend-less mix of low everyday prices locked on hundreds of products until Easter, Aldi Price Match, and Clubcard Prices is something customers can trust to help keep their budgets in check for household favourites, store cupboard staples, and added extra treats for the long January days.”

Clubcard Prices

As well as popular branded products, prices have been locked on many favourite own-brand staples. This new-year price lock follows a similar initiative, which saw prices frozen from October until the start of 2023.
