Mr O’Grady is a former chief financial officer of Bank of Ireland, whose chief executive, Francesca McDonagh, is departing.

“Myles joined Musgrave to be part of a leadership team with an ambition to grow a world class food and beverage business,” said Noel Keeley, Musgrave Group CEO, in a statement confirming that Mr O’Grady had tendered his resignation to take up a senior role in a non-competing sector.

“However, we appreciate this is a unique opportunity for him. While Myles was with us for a short period, he made a valuable contribution to the business during that time.”

Mr O’Grady said in the statement: “I joined Musgrave to support the business on the next stage of its corporate development and growth and have been thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of its current successful strategy.

“However, the leadership opportunity I am intending on taking up is unique and offers me the ability to achieve great outcomes for various stakeholders and broader society too.”

“While my time with Musgrave has been short, it has been a privilege to be a part of one of Europe’s most successful family-owned businesses. I have every faith that Musgrave will thrive into the future as it continues to impressively build on its 146-year heritage in food and brand innovation.”

Mr O’Grady joined Bank of Ireland in June 2019 as Finance Director Ireland and was appointed CFO in October 2019 and a member of the Board in January 2020.

In September last year the Bank of Ireland announced that he was leaving it to join Musgrave, and he took up that position in April.

SuperValu is partnering with Guaranteed Irish to encourage shoppers to shop sustainably, buy Irish and support local this June as part of Guaranteed Irish Food Month.

The call comes as new research shows that the vast majority (89%) of Irish people believe buying local products can help the environment, while 77 per cent of Irish shoppers feel it is important to buy sustainable products.

Over the past 12 months, shoppers say they have actively increased their efforts reduce their impact on the environment with three-quarters of people recycling more (76%), 69% reducing their use of single use plastic and 68% reducing waste in their household. Some 84% believe it is important to buy products that are in sustainable packaging.

The new research highlighted that three-quarters of people (76 per cent) prefer to buy more sustainable products whenever possible. More than two-thirds (69%) say they have made a more conscious decision to buy more sustainable products over the last 12 months.

Nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) of Irish shoppers have bought more locally produced goods in the past 12 months. Buying Irish products is not just important for the local economy, it is also positive for the environment. Some 89 per cent of people believe buying local helps the environment, while more than half of shoppers say that low food miles are an important consideration when doing their shopping (58%).

Supermarket retailer SuperValu has said it intends to invest more than €35m in approximately 50 stores this year, while creating at least 150 jobs.
This is in addition to the €23m deployed last year to revamp and refresh 42 outlets across its portfolio.

The supermarket chain said it plans to grow its nationwide presence, creating at least 150 jobs and adding to its existing 223 stores this year. It currently employs about 16,000 people.

SuperValu reported sales of €3.237 billion for 2021 as it increased weekly customers to 2.7 million during the year.

The retailer said its “robust” sales performance was driven by larger weekly shops, the success of own brand products and the demand for online and home delivery services.

Its online shopping service continued to growth in 2021, with sales representing a 10% increase on the previous year’s demand surge which had soared 173% due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

“The sustained growth in online is in response to changing consumer demands, as consumers adjusted to new hybrid routines, with an increased focused on convenience,” SuperValu said.

SuperValu also said it had invested significantly during the year in its Real Rewards loyalty offering, growing its total membership base to 1.2 million.

Managing Director Ian Allen said the company experienced another successful year of trading during 2021, delivering strong sales as it continued to invest in the business.

“As we look to the year ahead, together with our valued retail partners, we plan to further cement our leadership position by continuing to offer even more great value, support local producers, investing in technology and food innovation, enhancing our reputation for quality and inspiring food and delivering the best customer experience in the market,” Mr Allen said.

SuperValu has also launched its new food experience, which it said will “revolutionise” grocery shopping with a transformed food and enhanced sustainable experience.

The new food experience-based store allows customers to enjoy easier and simpler grocery shopping, combined with more sustainable choices.

Supermarket retail groups say they are working with their suppliers to ensure their supply chains remain resilient despite potential issues including the war in Ukraine and inflation.

Retail chain and wholesaler Musgrave said they were in constant contact with suppliers, and have a robust and resilient domestic and international supply chain.

A spokesperson told the Sunday Independent: We are working with suppliers to understand the impacts of the war in Ukraine, and our focus remains to ensure our customers continue to have access to their favourite ranges.

“We are confident that with 75% of all our goods being sourced in Ireland, we can continue to deliver the best value and quality Irish products for our customers during this uncertain time.”

The SuperValu owner also said it previously stocked a “very limited” number of Russian manufactured products and decided to discontinue them.

BWG Foods also said it had decided to cease the supply of products from Russia. It sourced a limited supply.

The Eurospar owner also said it was “engaging proactively and regularly” with many of its suppliers since the beginning of the conflict to determine the impact on food supply chains.

“Inflationary trends have been prevalent for several months now – however the combination of sanctions imposed on Russia and paralysed production in Ukraine, with both countries ranking amongst the world’s largest agricultural producers and exporters, is causing a surge in some food prices globally,” said Simon Marriott, chief operations officer of BWG.

“Our own supply chain in BWG Foods remains robust, and we do not expect any material impact on supplies, however some suppliers will undoubtedly seek to increase prices as a means of accounting for their higher input costs, and this will have implications for the wider grocery sector and also the
foodservice sector too.”

Lidl Ireland also said it is in constant contact with its suppliers to discuss sourcing or supply chain challenges, be that “other external factors such as the war in Ukraine” or inflationary pressure. However, it added that it was “difficult to predict” the war’s impact.

Aldi Ireland group managing director Niall O’Connor said the supermarket had been working hard to ensure its customers were protected from any inflationary pressures.

“Our buying teams are working very closely with our suppliers to ensure that there is minimal disruption to our supply chain so that our customers across the country have access to all the food and provisions they need.

“Aldi will continue to do everything to shield our customers from price increases as much as possible.”
