Global crude oil prices have soared to their highest levels since 2008, heightening pressure on the Government to move to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel.

The price of a barrel of Brent Crude — the European and international benchmark for oil pricing — for delivery in May briefly hit $140 a barrel in early trade on March 7 2022, following comments by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, but later fell again.

European natural gas prices also responded sharply following speculation that the flow of gas from Russia could be curbed, with benchmark Dutch TTF gas futures briefly hitting an all-time high of €345 per megawatt-hour.

Speaking on Sunday, Blinken said Washington was in “active discussions” with European nations about banning Russian oil imports as a further economic penalty against Moscow, although he stopped short of announcing an outright boycott.

Although energy products are exempt from sanctions, European and US companies are already buying less oil from Russia, which is intensifying pressure on the supply of crude from alternative sources.

This is had led to sharp price increases in the fortnight since the invasion with markets also anticipating that Russia could stop supplying oil to Europe in retaliation for sanctions.

While it takes up to eight weeks for increases in wholesale oil prices to trickle down to consumers in the form of higher petrol and diesel costs, prices in Irish forecourts have already risen sharply in the past 12 months as the economy reopened and demand returned.

Petrol and diesel prices rose by almost 30% and 32% in the year to the end of January, according to the Central Statistics Office.

Amid heightened concern about increases in the cost of living in Ireland, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar signalled on Friday that the Government could intervene on costs before the budget in October.

Four UK energy suppliers have gone bust in one day as gas market highs hit the region’s energy market.

Since the start of September, 17 energy companies have collapsed amid fears that Russia could curb gas supplies to Europe.

Energy regulator Ofgem, said the collapse of four small energy suppliers on Tuesday November 2 would leave around 24,000 households in need of a new supplier.

The energy company collapses come as global energy market prices surge following a rising demand for gas as Covid-19 restrictions around the world begin to ease.

Gas markets have hit record highs in recent weeks, resulting in sharp increases in home energy bills.

The biggest of the four companies was Zebra Power which supplied 14,800 households with energy, while Omni Energy supplied around 6,000 domestic pre-payment customers. AmpowerUK had around 600 UK customers and supplied a futher 2,000 overseas households and MA Energy had around 300 overseas customers.

More energy suppliers are expected to collapse in the months ahead as gas markets remain heated, with suppliers shouldering the higher costs without breaching the regulator’s energy price cap.

Energy regulator Ofgem set out plans for “bold action” last week to fasttrack changes to its price cap which protects around 15 million households from unfair energy bills, following growing calls from suppliers to make the cap more flexible so that market increases can be passed on to households sooner.

Gas prices are more than three times higher than this time last year, and could continue to climb as temperatures plunge across Europe and Russia squeezes gas exports to Europe.

Gas flows from Russia’s state-owned gas giant Gazprom, which supplies about a third of Europe’s gas, dropped significantly at the weekend and on Tuesday the company declined to offer extra gas supplies to Europe from January, when demand is often at its highest for the winter.

The slowdown in gas exports has reignited fears over the winter’s energy suppliers despite a direct order from the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, for Gazprom to focus on filling its European gas storage facilities from 8 November, when Russian domestic storage should be filled.

Global energy watchdog, the International Energy Agency, said last month that Russia should help to ease market prices bu boosting gas exports to Europe this winter.

Moscow has denied it is withholding gas supplies from Europe via its pipelines through Ukraine and Poland to exert pressure on German regulators to approve gas shipments through the new Nord Stream 2 pipeline across the Baltic Sea to Germany.

But its decision to send only contracted volumes despite the strong demand for extra gas supplies is likely to raise gas market prices across Europe, helping Russia to charge more for its hydrocarbon exports.

A Fermanagh glass company says it is facing energy cost rises of up to 150% this year.

Encirc, which makes glass bottles for the food and drink industry at its plants in Fermanagh and the north-west of England says profitability is being hit hard and it may be forced to look at passing price increases on.
Managing director Adrian Curry told the BBC that the firm typically spends £40m a year on energy, but the sharp rise in gas prices means that could hit £100m this year.
“There seems to be no cap to it and it’s continuing to rise on an almost weekly basis,” Mr Curry said.
“Generally we will have contracts for 12 months at a time, so we’re having to look at what contracts are offering… how we can pass these price increases on and how we can protect our business in that regard.
“Our businesses are not at risk, per se, but our profitability is being hit hard.”
Encirc’s Derrylin plant is one of Northern Ireland’s biggest industrial gas users.
High energy costs have been forcing manufacturers across the UK to warn of higher prices for their goods as they pass on increases to consumers.
Some firms say they may be forced to shut down their factories if the rising cost of gas and electricity makes it uneconomic for them to produce their goods.
Manufacturing NI (MNI) says companies are also seeing sharply rising electricity costs.
MNI said that October sees old contracts expire and new ones come into effect and that some firms have seen “prices doubled and more”.
