Wine sales fell last year following the reopening of hospitality, industry group Drinks Ireland has revealed.

Wine sales had risen during Covid-19 lockdowns, as the likes of beer drinkers moved to the category while consuming at home.

However the return to pubs and restaurants saw that trend reverse, with wine sales down 13% in 2021 as a result.

That brought wine sales to their lowest point since 2015, according to Drinks Ireland’s Wine Market Report 2021.

White wine remained the most popular type of wine in the country, making up 48% of the market.

Wine from Chile was the most popular in the year, though French wine was the only category to see its market share increase year-on-year.

Drinks Ireland has repeated its call for a cut in excise on wine, as it said more than half of the cost of a standard bottle of wine went towards tax.

“We are calling for a 15% decrease on excise on wine over the next two budgets,” said Jonathan McDade, director of wine at Drinks Ireland.

“As the cost-of-living crisis worsens, Irish consumers face the highest excise on wine in the EU.”

Family-owned fine food shop McCambridge’s has been sold to Irish grocery giant Musgrave Group.

The award-winning deli, wine outlet and restaurant is been a focal point in Galway city centre since opening in 1922.

Managing director Eoin, grandson of founder George, and sisters Natalie and Norma agreed to sell to wholesale and retail grocery giants Musgrave for an undisclosed sum after putting the business up for sale on the open market.

The family is understood to be retiring from the business, but it is expected Musgrave will keep the 34-strong staff when they take over in the near future, while no immediate changes to the shop are expected.

Musgrave, which owns all Supervalu and Centra businesses, also acquired Donnybrook Fair in 2018 in a move towards more upmarket food retail outlets, products which are now supplied across Supervalu outlets.

It is understood some 70 per cent or more of its products are sourced in Ireland, and that is expected to continue when the change of ownership is complete.

In a statement Musgrave described McCambridge’s as a fantastic addition to the group which “aligns with our purpose of Growing Good Business”.

“McCambridge’s is internationally, nationally and locally acclaimed, and greatly admired by food lovers over many years,” it said.

“The store currently employs 34 people, all of whom will remain with the business as part of the transition to the Musgrave group. We look forward to working with them as part of the business integration process over the coming months.”

The McCambridge family says they believe the sale of the business is an “exciting development” and “one that will both secure employment and the shop’s future as part of a new chapter in the long history of McCambridge’s”.

“From one family business to another, we believe Musgrave’s values are strongly aligned to our own, and we look forward to watching the store thrive under new ownership.”

The McCambridge family thanked “all colleagues and suppliers, past and present, for their hard work and support”.

“We would like to thank our professional team of Cantwell Corporate Finance Ltd, Sheehan & Co Solrs, and Coll & Co. Finally, we would like to extend our appreciation to our customers for their loyalty through the years. We could not have run such a successful and long-standing business without them.”

The government is being warned that new laws banning the sale of cheap alcohol could reduce tax returns because people are heading to Northern Ireland to buy beer, spirits and wine.

The government has been advised that the introduction earlier this year of minimum unit pricing on alcohol could ultimately lead to less tax due to people shopping across the border.

A Department of Finance Tax Strategy Group paper on excise duty said it was too early to gauge the impact of the introduction of minimum unit pricing.

But it warned: “It is clear, however, its introduction has resulted in price differentials on alcohol products across the border which might lead to an increase in cross-border trade, undermining the tax take from alcohol sales.”

The guidance came among a range of options on tax and welfare for ministers to consider as they prepare for next month’s Budget.

This includes proposals to increase all welfare rates by €15 and introduce tax cuts for two million taxpayers.

The government is not bound by the recommendations but Irish Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said consideration will be given to all the proposals outlined by his officials.

The paper on excise notes that the Drinks Industry Group Ireland (DIGI) and the National Off-Licence Association have called in their pre-budget submissions for a 7.5% reduction in alcohol excise in Budget 2023 with a further 7.5% reduction in 2024.

“It considers that this will help the drinks and hospitality sector to rebuild commercial activity in all areas of the country and to recover employment,” it said.

The document also notes that the Republic has the highest level of excise duty on wine in the EU and the second highest on beer and spirits.

Alcohol consumption fell by 4.7% between 2020 and 2021 as the hospitality sector endured strict lockdowns in an effort to stop the spread of Covid-19, according to new provisional data from Revenue.
Alcohol consumption saw a fall of 9.6% between 2019 and 2021, which Drinks Ireland said showed the true impact of Covid related restrictions and closures on hospitality venues.

Beer and cider consumption saw the most dramatic declines due to their popularity in pub trade. Beer consumption fell by 18.3% between 2019 and 2021 and cider was down by 15.1%.

Meanwhile, wine consumption was down by 13.1% between 2020 and 2021 and by 2.7% between 2019 and 2021.

Spirits consumption remained relatively static, rising marginally by 1.9% between 2019 and 2021.

Drinks Ireland said that people have progressively been drinking less since 2001. It noted that alcohol consumption is now at its lowest level in 20 years and has fallen by about 30% since 2001.

Patricia Callan, Director of Drinks Ireland, said today’s data shows the continued decline in alcohol consumption in Ireland, exacerbated by the Covid pandemic.

“The industry has worked hard to continue to tackle alcohol misuse. The growing trend we see at home and in other established international markets is people choosing to drink quality over quantity, which we welcome and will continue to encourage,” Ms Callan added.
