Tesco Ireland plans to spend €80 million this year on eight new store openings, extensive refits and refurbishment upgrades. The  investment will be used to open new Express stores, carry out significant upgrade projects for 50 stores, and for maintenance across the store network.

The news comes as Tesco Ireland gets set to open its 167th store on Scholarstown Road, at Two Oaks, Rathfarnham, in South Dublin on 7 September. Three more Express stores will open in Dublin by the end of the year, as well as other stores in Cork and Waterford.

Geoff Byrne, chief operating office, Tesco Ireland, said, “We have an ambitious development strategy for the business and are very excited to be expanding our Tesco Express model.

“We remain as committed as ever to delivering a rewarding shopping experience for our customers, which offers real value,” he added.

The Tesco Express model is proving very successful in urban settings and reflects evolving consumer demand for greater convenient shopping opportunities in high footfall areas.

Tesco Ireland Commercial Director Joe Manning has been named President of Appeals for the Irish Grocers Benevolent Fund (IGBF). Joe replaces outgoing president Kevin Keating of Tennet & Ruttle, who has been in the role for past twelve months.

Following the announcement Joe said: “It’s my honour to serve as President of Appeals of the IGBF for 2023. Throughout my career in the industry, the IGBF has been an integral part of the retail landscape, providing essential help to those in need. Now more than ever, the role of the hardship fund is as important as it was when it began 59 years ago. It’s a testament to the long-standing members of the industry who have ensured that we look after our industry’s members, spouses and bereaved families right across the country. I’m looking forward to the year ahead and doing my part to support.”

In his role as Commercial Director with Tesco, Joe is responsible for ensuring the integrated commercial success of the business in Ireland. Having worked across a variety of commercial roles in Ireland and the UK for Cadbury/Mondelez International, Joe joined Tesco in 2014 as Ambient Category Director, before assuming the role of Fresh Director in April 2017. Joe was then appointed Commercial Director in 2018. In addition to the commercial strategy, Joe oversees Sourcing and Food Waste elements of Tesco’s ESG strategy, supplier relationships and its support of Irish agribusiness. Tesco Ireland has said it will spend around €50 million this year on store upgrades, maintenance, and new openings.

Two new Tesco Express stores recently opened in Spencer Dock and South Lotts Road in Dublin, with two further Tesco Express stores due to open in Smithfield and Charlemont Square before the end of the year.

Tesco also opened its new 11,000 sq ft store at White Pines in Rathfarnham in February.

It said a similar size store will also open its doors at Adamstown in West Dublin later this year.

In addition, a major refurbishment and extension of Tesco’s Artane Castle store has been completed.

The retailer says a rebrand and redesign programme is getting underway with Tesco’s recently acquired portfolio of nine stores across Galway city and county owned by the Joyce family, which was completed in June.

It said a refit programme of older stores is also continuing across the country.

Tesco Ireland now has 154 shops across the country and employs more than 13,000 people.

“We anticipate these new store openings and with the addition of Joyce’s supermarkets in Galway, we will bring our overall number of stores to 165 this year, which is really good news for our colleagues, customers and the communities in which we operate,” said Natasha Adams, Tesco Ireland CEO.

“We are continuously expanding and maintaining our estates and we are adding new employment with every store opening.”

Tesco Ireland is calling on local community groups to apply to become ‘One in a Million’ as it relaunches its long-established and much-loved Community Fund programme for 2022, with €1 million being made available to local causes across Ireland this year.

The Tesco Community Fund provides financial support to good causes and community groups that matter most to its colleagues, customers, and communities across Ireland. For 2022, the Tesco Community Fund will focus on four key themes of Community Development, Food, Children and Health to showcase the incredible work local causes do for their communities.

Tesco is celebrating the local heroes who have made a positive difference in communities up and down the country – those who are truly one in a million. The past two years has been incredibly challenging for local community groups, yet community leaders and volunteers in towns all over Ireland rose to the challenge to provide important support services and activities that help build and main connections and improve people’s lives every day.

The new and improved Community Fund initiative sees the return of the familiar blue tokens, which are now made from fully recyclable materials, to Tesco stores nationwide. Each time a customer shops in a Tesco store, they can vote for their preferred cause to receive funding using the blue tokens. At the end of the twelve-week campaign, votes are counted and up to €2,000 is shared between three local groups.

Speaking at the relaunch of the  Tesco Community Fund, Rosemary Garth, Communications Director, Tesco Ireland said: “We’re incredibly proud to have helped over 21,000 community projects across the country over the last eight years. We know how important Community Fund donations are to local organisations including purchasing sports kits, enabling senior citizen supports, helping to maintain their premises, and supporting the purchase of much-needed equipment at a local level.

“As we approach 25 years of operating in Ireland this year, we are delighted to confirm that this year’s total fund donation is €1 million. It’s humbling to see the outstanding work done by these incredible causes; they are truly one in a million. We hope Tesco customers throughout Ireland will show their support and vote for their local causes across the four key themes of Tesco Community Fund 2022.”

Now entering its eighth year, the Community Fund campaign continues to provide vital support to community groups across Ireland. To nominate a community group or good cause applications can be submitted via the Tesco online application form online.

Launched in 2014, the Tesco Community Fund is a platform through which each Tesco store can provide financial support to good causes within its local community. Since its introduction, Tesco has donated over €6 million to over 21,000 local community projects nationwide.

Tesco Ireland has announced a deal to buy 10 Joyce’s Supermarkets retail stores based in Galway for an undisclosed sum.
Tesco first entered the Irish market in 1997 and the new deal marks its first significant investment for a portfolio of supermarkets in Ireland during that time.

The supermarkets currently operate under the Joyce family’s independent brand and will be rebranded and designed as Tesco stores during 2022 on a phased basis. The acquisition is still subject to the approval of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).

Staff at the supermarkets will become Tesco Ireland employees when the deal is complete.

As part of its commitment to Irish agri-food, Tesco also said it will engage with suppliers to the Joyce business to identify and develop opportunities.

Patrick C Joyce started the family business in Headford in 1951 with a small grocery store and followed this with a travelling shop and then developed into a general supermarket.

Pat Joyce took over the business in 1988 and since then nine more supermarkets have been opened in Knocknacarra, Athenry, Tuam, Inverin, Ballybane, Fr Griffin Road, Doughiska, Oranmore and Oughterard. The group employs more than 500 people.

Tesco Ireland chief executive Kari Daniels said the deal is part of the company’s strategic ambition to bring its quality and value to more customers:

“I look forward to bringing Tesco to more communities in Galway in the year ahead – this agreement provides a great platform for us to bring our value, quality and range of products to more customers,” Ms Daniels said.

“Pat Joyce, the management and wider team at Joyce’s Supermarkets have built a fantastic business over many years and there are great aspects of the Joyce business that can complement our Tesco offering,” she added.

Pat Joyce, Managing Director of Joyce’s Supermarkets, said the deal was a historic moment for his business.

“We have carefully considered the opportunity and are very pleased to pass our business on to an established brand in Tesco that promotes quality and excellence across its business, and which has an established presence in the Irish market,” he said.

“Should this acquisition be approved, I believe the move will be of significant benefit to them, and I would look forward to continuing our work well into next year as part of a transition period,” he added.

Tesco Ireland has 151 stores nationwide and five in Galway. It employs over 13,000 people in cities and towns around Ireland and partners with over 490 Irish suppliers
