The world’s largest surplus food app, Too Good To Go, has announced it has prevented more than 100,000 bags of food from going to waste in Ireland.

The free-to-download app officially launched in Dublin nine months ago, with Limerick, Galway and Cork following shortly after.

Since then, the app has gathered 150,000 registered users and partnered with nearly 1,000 food businesses across the country, including major names like Fresh, Spar and Applegreen.

Every Surprise Bag rescued through Too Good To Go saves the equivalent C02e emissions that it takes to power a smartphone 442 times. Thanks to the collective efforts of Too Good To Go’s partners and users, over 250 tons of C02e emissions have been saved to date in Ireland, the equivalent needed to power 2,333 flights from Dublin to London or for every person in Ireland to charge their phones 8.8 times.

Sophie Trueman, Too Good To Go Managing Director UK & Ireland, says: “It’s amazing to have reached this incredible milestone so quickly in Ireland! There are so many benefits to preventing delicious food from going to waste – retailers can recover their sunk costs, while consumers can access great food at an affordable price. Everyone wins and together we can do good for our planet too. I’m incredibly excited to see our food waste mission continue to grow in Ireland as we rescue even more great food from going to waste.”

David Field, Managing Director of Fresh, one of the largest partners of Too Good To Go, adds: “Too Good To Go forms part of our overall strategy to reduce our impact on climate change and using it has allowed us to have a real impact. As our name suggests, we have amazing fresh produce available every day. Too Good To Go allows us to minimise this food waste at store level, while also giving something back to our customers and delivering real value. Our partnership started in January of this year and it has been a huge success for us!”

Too Good To Go is a social impact company working with companies to prevent food waste by allowing customers to purchase surplus food from restaurants, convenience retailers and producers for an affordable price. Users download the free Too Good To Go app and search for nearby businesses that offer unsold food, where they can then purchase a ‘Surprise Bag’ filled with delicious food at a third of its original retail value, collect it at an allotted time and enjoy.

The world’s largest anti-food waste app, Too Good To Go, has officially launched in Galway.

Leading the food waste movement, Too Good To Go lets people buy surplus food and drink from restaurants, grocery stores, pubs, cafes and producers to stop it from going to waste.

Galwegians can simply download the free Too Good To Go app and search for their nearby store with unsold food. They then purchase a ‘Surprise Bag’ at a fraction of the original retail price, collect it at an allotted time and enjoy it.

There are already 17 Galwegian businesses signed up to fight food waste with Too Good To Go. Brands include Temple Cafe, Marmalade Bakery, Mountain Road Kitchen, Mocha Beans, Ember Firehouse and Rouge.

Having first launched in Dublin in October, Too Good To Go has already amassed a community of over 50,000 app users and over 330 food businesses, who together have saved over 35,000 bags of food from going to waste. That means to date Dubliners have saved 62,500 kg of CO2e, the equivalent of that emitted from 581 flights from Dublin to London.

Now having launched in Galway, there is a huge potential for Galwegians to join the food waste fighting movement. In fact a recent survey commissioned by Too Good To Go found that almost half of Galwegians (47%) have included sustainable habits in their 2022 resolutions*.

Co-founder of Too Good To Go, Jamie Crummie said: “I’m thrilled to be launching Too Good To Go in Galway. We’ve already seen a huge appetite for fighting food waste since we arrived in Ireland in October last year and I’m excited to see how much of an impact Galwegians can have in the coming months and years. By doing something as simple as saving a Surprise Bag on their way home from work or on their way to meet friends, they’re doing their part in tackling climate change while getting some delicious food in the process – it’s a win-win.”

On joining Too Good To Go, Cafe Temple said: “As a social business we wanted to join Too Good To Go as the ethos just sits perfectly with our goals of sustainability and waste reduction. Every year tonnes of food that is perfectly edible is thrown away and anything we can do to counter this and reduce our impact on the planet must be done. Too Good To Go is a great platform as it allows you to connect with your customers and provide them with yummy food (that’s still perfect to eat) that would otherwise be wasted whilst still recovering costs.”
