Circle K, Ireland’s leading forecourt and convenience retailer, has today announced that its fleet of delivery vehicles will be fuelled exclusively by milesBIO HVO100 by early 2023. The company is the first fuel retailer in Ireland to use Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) renewable diesel in its fleet of delivery vehicles, which is the equivalent of over 2,000 cars removed from the road once the rollout is complete.

Circle K’s fuel station located at Dublin Port will be the first to fuel the fleet with HVO renewable diesel, with work underway at two further locations in Galway and Cork, to ensure Circle K’s full fleet of vehicles will be powered by milesBIO HVO100 by early next year.

milesBIO HVO100 is a completely fossil-free biofuel made from waste, by-products and derived products not intended for human consumption from the food industry and can be used to power diesel vehicles. HVO alternative diesel offers an up to 90% reduction in carbon emissions over regular diesel, which will help to greatly reduce the emissions from Circle K’s fleet of fuel delivery vehicles.

While milesBIO HVO100 is new to Circle K Ireland, this renewable diesel has been available across Scandinavia at Circle K locations in Norway, Sweden and Denmark in recent years, which is helping to guide the introduction of the renewable diesel here.

milesBIO HVO100 will also be available to commercial customers at Circle K’s service station in Dublin Port, with the product to be rolled out at Circle K’s locations in Cork and Galway in the coming months, to support commercial customers in decarbonising the journeys of their own respective fleets. Circle K anticipates that organisations operating large fleet transport vehicles in sectors such as refuse, retail, and logistics amongst others will benefit greatly from this new product.

Today’s announcement is just one of the ways Circle K is leading innovation within the fuel retail sector and supporting the Irish Government in its ambition to reduce transport carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.

Alongside the use of milesBIO HVO100 to power its fuel delivery fleet, Circle K supports the proposed move from E5 to E10 in petrol products in the Irish market, which would increase the level of ethanol in petrol from 5% to 10%, thus significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Circle K is already supporting the commercial freight and haulage sectors, being the only forecourt to offer Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling stations at Dublin Port, Cashel, Clonshaugh and Ballysimon in Limerick, with City North to follow.

With more Irish motorists opting for EVs, Circle K is adapting to keep pace with this change. Circle K is preparing for this future now and through its strategic partnerships with ESB, IONITY and Tesla, the business already has the most advanced EV charging network within the forecourt sector in Ireland, with EV charging facilities located at 37 service stations nationwide and continues to add to this network.

Jonathan Diver, Fuels Director with Circle K Ireland commented: “Circle K is committed to implementing environmentally sustainable practices across our product range and operations as well as supporting our customers to reduce their level of carbon emissions.

“The launch of milesBIO HVO100 across our fleet of delivery vehicles will have a significant impact in reducing emissions across our Irish operations and once fully rolled out early next year, will equate to the emissions of over 2,000 cars being removed from the road.

“milesBIO HVO100 is a renewable diesel product that combines both excellent technical and environmental properties, that significantly reduces the net carbon emission when compared to regular diesel fuel, while at the same time offering the same performance as conventional diesel.”

“We are delighted to be introducing alternative fuels of this nature to Circle K Ireland and hope our lead will encourage others to do the same.”

Shell has named Wael Sawan, the head of its renewables and gas business, as its new CEO to replace Ben van Beurden.
Ben van Beurden is stepping down at the end of the year after nearly a decade in the role.

Sawan, 48, a Canadian national and former head of Shell’s oil and gas production business, was seen as the front-runner to succeed van Beurden, Reuters had reported earlier this month.

After initially resisting calls to finalise firm greenhouse emission reduction targets, Shell has since 2017 gradually set more ambitious goals to tackle global warming, facing pressure from environmental activists.

It is now aiming to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050 with several short and medium-term targets.

“We will be disciplined and value focused,” Sawan said in a statement.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and the collapse in energy demand in early 2020, Shell cut its dividend, the world’s largest at the time at around $15 billion, for the first time since World War Two.

Sawan’s appointment is effective January 1, Shell said, while  van Beurden will continue to work as an adviser to the board until June 30.

“Bags of decorative hardened Irish mud for sale. Ornamental use only – not to be burned in fire,” read the sign attached to McNulty’s Fuels’ turf trolley outside the shop in Hospital village.

Eric McNulty, the owner of the service station, said he made the sign as a fun-but-serious way to highlight the struggles he faces as a business owner who mainly sells fossil fuels as the Government plans on banning the sale of turf from October 1.

“Everything I have the government is trying to ban so they’re not doing me any favours at the moment,” Eric said.

Eric previously worked in renewable energy in the UK for a time before moving home to Ireland.

“There were no jobs in my field when I came home. The government are trying to push renewable energy but there’s been nothing done for the last ten years to make it a viable option for people,” Eric added.

“It’s a bit of an unorthodox thing for a man with my qualifications to own a petrol station but I had to go in the complete opposite direction in this country to make a living.”

Eric believes that the government’s initiatives to ban fossil fuels are counterproductive.

“They’re banning smoky coal and the price of smokeless is at an all time high because of it and we’re now being pushed towards electric cars in a rural area where there is no infrastructure in place for it,” Eric said, adding that reaction to the sign has been mostly positive.

“It’s gotten over 13,000 likes online which is incredible. To be honest, I was expecting backlash but most people so far have been supportive and are finding the humour in it,” Eric told Limerick Live.

Chief Executive Officer of BP Bernard Looney has warned that the current crisis in the European gas market is “not a one winter deal”.

He was responding to a question from the audience at the Irish Academy of Engineering where Mr Looney was formally inducted as a fellow at a ceremony.

Mr Looney told the audience his ambition is to transform BP into a net zero carbon emissions company by 2050 by increasing its investments in renewable energy technologies and companies.

One of the projects with which the company is currently involved is a survey of the waters around Britain involving five ships and 200 personnel to gauge its potential for further offshore energy locations.

He also detailed how BP has become the biggest provider of fast-chargers for electric vehicles in Germany and that this is key focus for the company.

He said the ‘world is changing at pace…the battle is over and EV’s have won…’ although he thinks it will be some time for EV sales to take over from petrol and diesel.

Mr Looney, from Kenmare in Co Kerry, joined BP in 1991 after graduating from UCD with an honours degree in electrical engineering.

Following a career which stretched from the North Sea to Mexico and Alaska, he rose to become CEO in February 2020.

He said the war in Ukraine had highlighted what he terms the ‘energy trilemma’ which is the need to deliver secure, affordable and low carbon energy.

He told the audience: ‘…the conversation has been focused on one element of that trilemma…how do we drive emissions down…’ but said more needed to be done to deliver secure energy.

Mr Looney said the job of BP was to continue to invest in hydrocarbons but less than they used to and at the same time ‘… investing at scale to accelerate the transition…’ to renewable energy.

UN chief slams ‘excessive’ profits of oil and gas firms https://forecourtretailer.com/un-chief-slams-excessive-profits-of-oil-and-gas-firms/ Thu, 04 Aug 2022 10:09:50 +0000 https://forecourtretailer.com/?p=20975 UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for taxation on windfall profits of oil and gas companies to ease the impact of the global energy crisis

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for taxation on windfall profits of oil and gas companies to ease the impact of the global energy crisis on the most vulnerable people.

“It is immoral for oil and gas companies to be making record profits from this energy crisis on the back of the poorest people and communities and at a massive cost to the climate,” said Mr Guterres at the launch of the third report of his Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance.

The combined profits of the largest energy companies in the first quarter of this year are close to $100 billion, he noted.

He urged all governments to tax these excessive profits and use the funds to support the most vulnerable people through the current difficult times.

All countries, and especially developed countries, must manage energy demand. Conserving energy, promoting public transport and nature-based solutions are essential components of that, he said.

There is also a need to accelerate the transition to renewables, which in most cases are cheaper than fossil fuels. At the same time, private and multilateral finance for the green energy transition must be scaled up, he said.

Every country is part of this energy crisis, and all countries are paying attention to what others are doing.

Mr Guterres said the energy crisis is a global issue, expressing the hope that the recommendations in the report could help ease the energy crisis.

“I think the question is global. It has to do with the availability of the different sources of energy globally. And for that, I believe the measures that we have announced should lead the markets to stabilisation and the reduction of prices,” he said.
