The Musgrave Group has launched a major fundraising campaign across the island of Ireland to support people impacted by the recent earthquake in Syria and Turkey.

Musgrave has already donated €100,000 to the emergency relief fund.

Effective from last Friday, 10 February, Musgrave has rolled out a major fundraising campaign enabling customers of both retail and wholesale brands across the island of Ireland to donate through a simple ‘tap to donate’ mechanism at the till.

The donation drive lasts for two weeks.

100% of the funds donated will go directly to the Irish Red Cross and UNICEF to help fund the immediate humanitarian response, the company highlighted.

Noel Keeley, CEO, Musgrave Group, said, “We in Musgrave, along with our customers, colleagues and retail partners have all been deeply saddened by the scale of the humanitarian crisis following the earthquake in Syria and Turkey.

Musgrave is immediately contributing €100,000 to the Irish Red Cross and UNICEF to help bring much needed supplies including food, blankets, and medicine to those impacted by this devastating event.

“We are also encouraging our customers to donate what they can at the till. Working closely with the charities, we will ensure that 100% of the donations go as quickly as possible to help those who need it.”

Deirdre Garvey, Secretary General of the Irish Red Cross, said, “We would like to thank the people across the island of Ireland and Musgrave for their generosity and quick response to this crisis.

“Cash donations allow us to respond as quickly as possible on the ground to ensure the donations can make an impact to those who need it most.”

Peter Power, executive director, UNICEF Ireland echoed the sentiments and added, The children of Syria and Turkey urgently need support.

“Through this action by Musgrave and their customers, UNICEF will be able to protect more children and deliver critical life-saving support to those affected by the earthquake in Syria and Turkey.”

It emerged two weeks ago that Mr O’Grady (53) was stepping down as chief financial officer of Musgrave, a little over four months after he joined the group from Bank of Ireland, to pursue a “unique leadership opportunity”. This prompted speculation that he was being lined up to succeed the bank’s outgoing chief executive Francesca McDonagh.

It is reported that the bank’s board, led by chairman Patrick Kennedy, has picked Mr O’Grady to become its chief executive, subject to him clearing a vetting process by regulatory officials from the European Central Bank and Central Bank of Ireland.

Meanwhile, Bank of Ireland is expected to announce the appointment of Gavin Kelly, chief executive of its Irish retail banking unit, as its interim group chief executive in the coming days. Ms McDonagh is set to leave the group by the end of the week after five years at the helm, to become group chief operating officer at financial giant Credit Suisse.

The change at the top of Bank of Ireland comes as the Government is expected to cut the State’s stake in the lender to zero in the coming months. Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe has reduced the holding in the past 14 months from 13.9 per cent to below 3 per cent — taking it from being the bank’s main shareholder to outside the top 10.

The Musgrave Group has lobbied the government for changes to foreign visa rules to allow more workers into the country.

The  SuperValu and Centra owner says staff shortages are an issue across the board, sparking the need to recruit from outside the EU.

The group met with Minister of State from the Department of Enterprise Damien English, Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney and MEP Mairead McGuinness and other politicians to seek changes to visa requirements that would make it easier to recruit from third countries.

Director of corporate affairs Edel Clancy said staff shortages were an issue “across the board” for retail, which had created the need to recruit from outside Ireland and the EU.

She also said that government needed to “do more in terms of the cost of accommodation and public transport.”

Clancy said that while the group “exhausts all avenues to hire Irish workers and EU workers,” a shortage across the board, created the need to recruit from outside the EEA.

In October, Minister of State for Business Damien English abolished the quota of 320 for employment permits granted to HGV drivers from outside the European Economic Area (EEA), the Irish Times reported.  A total of 187 employment permits were issued, the majority of which went to South Africa.

More dairy-farm assistants, meat processors, builders, hospitality managers, horticulture workers, are to be allowed the work permits, as well as social workers and opticians.

A spokesman for the Department said changes are made to employment permit occupations lists “where there are no suitable Irish/EEA nationals available and the labour shortage is genuine and not due to working conditions or the salary being offered.”

The next review of the Occupations Lists will open in the coming weeks by Public Consultation.
