Tortilla Mexican Grill PLC (“Tortilla”), the fast-casual Mexican restaurant brand, has confirmed Uber Eats and Just Eat as its delivery partners, following a review of the brand’s delivery strategy, which was announced on 20 December 2023.

Delivery is an important sales channel for Tortilla as the food offering is well-suited to being consumed off-premises.

The Group delivered more than 1.5 million mains across Uber Eats, Just Eat and Deliveroo in 2023, whilst maintaining an average of 4.6-star customer app rating. The Chicken Pibil Burrito won first-place for most ordered dish in 2023.

Whilst the Group’s multi-partner approach to delivery has supported strong growth in sales volumes and awareness, delivery commission charges have challenged margin performance.  To mitigate this, the Group sought for a new delivery structure and to strengthen the relationship between fewer partners.

Furthermore, Uber Eats UK had the highest order growth in the industry in 2023, with Gross Bookings up nearly 20% year-over-year.

The refined strategy will see Tortilla collaborating on some exciting marketing efforts; including the launch of exclusive products and offers, and heavy investment into brand awareness to attract new customers through a growing UK customer base.

The recent review is part of a series of wider ongoing management initiatives as the Group remains focussed on its strategic objective to drive EBITDA margin and profitability.

Andy Naylor, UK Managing Director at Tortilla says: “We’re delighted to extend our relationships with Uber Eats and Just Eat. We are confident that these strategic partnerships will play a key role in supporting sustainable, profitable growth across the important delivery channel, underpinning our growing presence as the UK’s leading fast-casual Mexican brand.”

Matthew Price, General Manager UK, Ireland and Northern Europe at Uber Eats comments:

“We’re thrilled to be building on what has been an incredibly successful partnership to date with Tortilla. The Tortilla menu is loved by our customers; ticking the boxes of flavour and freshness, speed and affordability, and we are really excited for the next steps in our partnership.”

Ireland’s love affair with takeaway

According to research** conducted by Just Eat earlier in the year, on average consumers order a takeaway 2.9 times per month, spending an average of €46.49 on their favourite cuisines. Ordering food is mostly a shared experience, with 54% of restaurant partners saying orders are for at least two people, while 37% say the average takeaway order is for a family.

Amanda Roche-Kelly, Managing Director at Just Eat Ireland, said: “We’re delighted to launch our 10th Just Eat Awards and reveal all of our amazing partners who have been shortlisted. Since launching the Just Eat Awards a decade ago, Just Eat has grown significantly and the make up of these partners has also evolved, from primarily traditional takeaways to a cross section of restaurants and grocery partners. This year’s awards categories have been created to reflect our broad range of partners and to give Ireland’s favourite food spots their moment to shine on a national stage. I would urge everyone to show their support for their favourite local restaurant, takeaway or grocery & convenience retailers and vote by the 13th of December.”

Launching the 10th annual Just Eat Awards Muireann O’Connell said:As a self-confessed takeaway lover and a frequent Just Eat user, I am delighted to launch this year’s Just Eat Awards. These Awards celebrate all the local heroes across the country who day in day out provide us with the most delicious food straight to our door. This is my second year to host the awards – awards that are voted on with the public so they get to recognise their favourite restaurants, takeaways and grocery and convenience retailers across the country. Be sure to cast your vote by the 13th of December, and I look forward to revealing the winners in March.”

Delivery Hero has slipped below its initial public offering price for the first time since 2017, after a selloff this year wiped out nearly three quarters of its market value.

The food-delivery stock has struggled this year, shedding about €18.1bn of its market value as investors question the company’s path to profitability amid rising borrowing costs.

European delivery services have also hit a rough patch, with Just Eat Takeaway plunging 62% and Deliveroo down 59%.

Delivery Hero shares dropped as much as 2.7% to a record low of €24.96 before reversing losses on Tuesday, dipping below the IPO price of €25.50 for the first time in five years. The stock is also the Stoxx 600 Index’s worst performer in 2022.

This time last year, the food-delivery industry was still riding high on a pandemic-fuelled boom in demand, but reality bit as economies reopened.

Relentless competition and inflation have squeezed already tight budgets, pressuring a sector that has yet to turn a profit. Rising interest rates and a broader rotation out of high growth stocks didn’t help. Inflation is also hitting consumer wallets.

Sagging sales are adding further fuel to the heated competition for market share in Europe, with rapid grocery delivery the latest battleground as startups like Getir and Gorillas push into the fray.

“Inflationary headwinds have been building, obviously, but they’re getting worse,” Berenberg analyst Sarah Simon said.

Data from Barclays shows that growth of consumer card spending on food takeaways slowed in the UK in April.

Disclosure concerns are weighing heavily on Delivery Hero’s stock. The company failed to break out order numbers in the first quarter after shifting to focus on profitability rather than volume.
