Tesco Ireland has said it will spend around €50 million this year on store upgrades, maintenance, and new openings.

Two new Tesco Express stores recently opened in Spencer Dock and South Lotts Road in Dublin, with two further Tesco Express stores due to open in Smithfield and Charlemont Square before the end of the year.

Tesco also opened its new 11,000 sq ft store at White Pines in Rathfarnham in February.

It said a similar size store will also open its doors at Adamstown in West Dublin later this year.

In addition, a major refurbishment and extension of Tesco’s Artane Castle store has been completed.

The retailer says a rebrand and redesign programme is getting underway with Tesco’s recently acquired portfolio of nine stores across Galway city and county owned by the Joyce family, which was completed in June.

It said a refit programme of older stores is also continuing across the country.

Tesco Ireland now has 154 shops across the country and employs more than 13,000 people.

“We anticipate these new store openings and with the addition of Joyce’s supermarkets in Galway, we will bring our overall number of stores to 165 this year, which is really good news for our colleagues, customers and the communities in which we operate,” said Natasha Adams, Tesco Ireland CEO.

“We are continuously expanding and maintaining our estates and we are adding new employment with every store opening.”

Retail giant Tesco has been urged to provide Irish-language self-service checkout tills at its new Galway Gaeltacht store.

The company acquired nine Joyce’s Supermarkets across Galway earlier this year and is in the process of rebranding and redesigning them as Tesco stores.

Among the supermarkets is ‘Siopa an Phobail’ in Indreabhán, in the Connemara Gaeltacht.

Conradh na Gaeilge this week urged Tesco to provide an Irish language self-service checkout at its Indreabhán store, which is the first-ever Tesco in the Gaeltacht.

Irish language news agency, Tuairisc.ie reported that Conradh na Gaeilge has recommended Irish-language self-service checkouts be installed in Indreabhán, similar to those available in Welsh-speaking areas of Wales.

Tesco has bilingual signs at its Galway City stores and issues bilingual press releases.

A spokesperson for Tesco Ireland told the Connacht Tribune that it has engaged with Údarás na Gaeltachta about taking over the Indreabhán shop and petrol station.

“We have begun the process to rebrand and redesign the Joyce’s Supermarkets as Tesco stores across Galway which will take place on a phased basis over the coming months. We’re delighted to confirm that in line with our community ethos, we will continue to operate Siopa an Phobail at Indreabhán,” ,” a Tesco Ireland spokesperson said.

“We are engaged with Údarás na Gaeltachta to ensure we’re responding to the needs of the Gaeltacht community and how best to support our new colleagues and customers as our integration begins.

She said that services provided at Indreabhán, including the petrol filling station, will be retained.

“During the transition process, we will be delighted to welcome employees from Joyce’s stores to the Tesco team.

“We will continue to keep customers and communities updated on the impact of refurbishment on store operations. We look forward to opening our Tesco store at Indreabhán later this year and thank the customers and communities for their patience while refurbishment works are carried out. We look forward to serving the community for many years to come,” she said.

Tesco to sell Joyce’s Oranmore over CCPC competition concerns https://forecourtretailer.com/tesco-to-sell-joyces-oranmore-over-ccpc-competition-concerns/ Wed, 08 Jun 2022 08:38:50 +0000 https://forecourtretailer.com/?p=20533 Tesco’s proposed takeover of the Joyce’s supermarket group in Galway has been cleared by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), subject to the provision

These conditions include the sale of the Joyce’s outlet in the suburb of Oranmore, where there is a large Tesco outlet nearby.

“Tesco has also committed not to carry out any act which may have a significant adverse impact on the supermarket before its sale and, not attempt to acquire the business back for a period of time following its sale,” the CCPC said in a statement.

An independent monitoring trustee has been appointed to ensure there is compliance with the commitments.

Tesco said it will comply with the condition and will ensure that employees are supported during the transition.

The CCPC said that taking the commitments into account, it has determined that the proposed acquisition will not substantially lessen competition and can therefore proceed.

The CCPC launched a full probe of the proposed transaction in April amid concern it might lessen the number of competitors to Tesco in the Oranmore area.

“As we celebrate 25 years of Tesco in Ireland, the approval of this acquisition is an exciting opportunity to continue to grow our business for the future; bringing great value, quality and broad range of products and services to the customers and communities of Galway City and County,” said Natasha Adams, CEO, Tesco Ireland.

Tesco first entered the Irish market in 1997 and the takeover marks its first significant investment for a portfolio of supermarkets in Ireland during that time.

The Joyce’s supermarkets will be rebranded and designed as Tesco stores during 2022 on a phased basis.

Patrick C Joyce started the family business in Headford in 1951 with a small grocery store, before developing a general supermarket.

Pat Joyce took over the business in 1988 and since then nine more supermarkets have been opened in Knocknacarra, Athenry, Tuam, Inverin, Ballybane, Fr Griffin Road, Doughiska, Oranmore and Oughterard.

The CCPC said that following an extended preliminary investigation, it has determined that a full investigation is required in order to establish if the proposed transaction could lead to a substantial lessening of competition in the state.

“The CCPC will publish its Phase 1 determination no later than 60 working days after the date of the determination and after allowing the parties the opportunity to request that confidential information be removed from the published version,” it said.

The supermarkets currently operate under the Joyce family’s independent brand and will be rebranded and designed as Tesco stores on a phased basis, if the deal gets the go-ahead.

Joyce’s staff will also become Tesco Ireland employees if the deal completes.

Tesco Ireland has 151 stores nationwide and five in Galway and employs over 13,000 people in cities and towns around Ireland.

Galway-based Joyce’s Supermarkets has teamed up with Irish owned suppliers reuzi and Lilly’s Eco Clean as part of its drive to provide easy access to sustainable cleaning products and everyday items for its customers.

Minimal waste store reuzi, which has a pop-up location in Joyce’s Knocknacarra, provides eco-friendly and sustainable products from reusable bottles and kitchenware to toiletries and homewares. Pat Kane, founder and MD of reuzi, has shared some top tips for making small changes to reduce your environmental impact at home.

According to Pat, when it comes to your home, small changes can add up. But consumers should not feel pressured to overhaul everything at once.

Pat says: “Start with simple tweaks like switching to energy-saving light bulbs or using a tap filter instead of buying bottled water; observing your consumption habits; and being conscious about how you dispose of goods, from pillows to batteries and beyond.”

Eco-friendly suggestions include:

  1. Try to be more energy savvy: By using less energy, you can help to reduce your carbon emissions. Try switching off standby appliances and device chargers, turning your heating down and hanging clothes to dry instead of using a dryer.
  2. Be more water wise: You can make a huge impact by reducing your water usage, taking shorter showers or fixing any leaky pipes around the house.
  3. Learn your local recycling and composting rules: When it comes to recycling, the rule is relatively clear: You can recycle paper and cardboard, soft and rigid plastics, tins and cans – always clean, dry and loose. Composting can be a bit more confusing, so reach out to your local waste collector to find out exactly what they accept.

Lilly’s Eco Clean is an Irish manufacturer of a range of natural household cleaning products benefitting our health, home and planet. Available in store at Joyce’s, Lilly’s Eco Clean products use plant and mineral-based ingredients and soaps, vinegar and essential oils. The products have been packed in 100% recycled bottles for over a decade.

Titta Jones at Lilly’s Eco Clean says: “Natural cleaning products provide an optimum way to clean in a new, non-toxic way. Many people opt for conventional cleaners, due to a lack of availability or knowledge about effective natural alternatives. But it is easier than people may think to find suitable alternatives to everyday cleaning products. Lilly’s is a long-established and trusted sustainable Irish brand.”

Lilly’s Eco Clean is based in Carna, Co.Galway. The product range includes nine liquid products ranging from Washing Up Liquid with lemon oil, All Purpose Spray with Citrus Oil Blend to Non-Bio Laundry Liquid and Fabric Softener with Orange Blossom and Chamomile. The brand was the was third biggest selling washing up liquid in 2021.

Aisling Joyce, Director of Operations at Joyce’s Supermarkets said: “We are delighted to be working with two forward-looking Irish businesses that are committed not only to developing sustainable products but also educating the public about how a series small changes can make a difference. Our staff are always on hand in our stores to advise our customers and to help them make changes with everyday products to reduce their impact on the environment.”
