The fastest EV charging point available in the UK has opened at a forecourt in Braintree, Essex.

Charging pioneer Gridserve has added a new 360kW Terra 360 charger which was developed by engineering giant ABB, and can add 100 miles of range to an electric car’s battery in just five minutes.

Gridserve’s newest charger is suitable for all EVs with two CCS connectors, contactless payment and access for wheelchair users. HGVs and commercial vehicles also have access to the new device, as well as drivers towing caravans.

But don’t expect to charge your car at 360kW: there actually aren’t any EVs on sale at the moment that can accept electricity at that speed. A Porsche Taycan, for example, can only be charged at speeds up to 350kW.

That doesn’t mean the new charger is pointless: it can also offer dynamic dual charging, in which two vehicles can be charged at the same time, with the unit distributing the 360kW output between the two in the most efficient fashion.

Gridserve also highlights other upgrades to the new unit, including LED lighting that shows if it’s in operation or free, and a pulley system to keep the cables out of the way.

Gridserve says that if successful, the firm could add more 360kW chargers to its Electric Forecourts as well as the Gridserve Electric Highway.

“By installing this latest innovation now, we are offering state of the art charging technology to our customers,” said Gridserve CEO, Toddington Harper.

“We’ve listened to driver feedback that our towing customers needed additional space to charge without decoupling and this new charger installation has given us the opportunity to provide that charging area at Braintree Electric Forecourt.”

Gridserve is aiming to open 100 electric forecourts across the UK, with the next site near Gatwick Airport set to open next year. Once opened, new forecourts in Stevenage, Gateshead and Uckfield will be built, while planning permission has also been granted for stations in Bromborough, Plymouth and Markham Vale.

The funding will support the company’s drive to decarbonise transport through EV infrastructure, enabling GRIDSERVE to deliver more than 5,000 High Power Chargers by 2025, across both Electric Super Hubs and Electric Forecourts.

The investment also accelerates GRIDSERVE’s plans to further the company’s pioneering Sun-to-Wheel model, which encompasses generating energy through hybrid solar farms, distributing energy through an award-winning national charging network of Electric Forecourts and Electric Hubs, and accelerating the uptake of electric vehicles with leasing a wide range of the latest electric vehicles.

Toddington Harper, GRIDSERVE CEO, said: “Through this investment partnership with Infracapital, we’re excited that our plans can accelerate, and it’s evident we now have the momentum we require. They are the perfect partners to join our business as we move to the next level as a company. Their commitment to clean tech, infrastructure, and ESG gives our collective organisations deep-rooted synergies around a shared mission.

“Investment in the future of our planet has never been so important and the IPCC’s latest dire warnings solidify the reality that we are in last chance territory, and we therefore need to take action as quickly as possible. This investment partnership will enable GRIDSERVE to continue to rise to this challenge and deliver maximum impact without delay. “

Andy Matthews, Head of Greenfield at Infracapital, said: “We are delighted to have invested in GRIDSERVE, as part of our ongoing drive to enable positive change and to make a meaningful contribution to the energy transition while delivering value to our investors. GRIDSERVE is leading the charge in the decarbonisation of the UK’s transport system and is led by an experienced management team that has already made great progress in expanding GRIDSERVE’s platform. We look forward to working with the GRIDSERVE team as the business moves into this next phase of growth.”

GRIDSERVE is transforming the EV charging experience and accelerating the decarbonisation of transport with the GRIDSERVE Electric Highway charging network, supplied by net zero carbon energy. The GRIDSERVE Electric Highway is a leading national public charging network covering 85% of the UK’s motorway service areas and some of the UK’s busiest retail destinations, and is already successfully charging more than 100,000 electric vehicles every month.

GRIDSERVE will expand development of its hybrid solar farms to generate and deliver net zero energy for its network. Every acre of UK solar farms that GRIDSERVE delivers is able to generate enough zero carbon energy every year to drive approximately 1 million miles in a modern electric car.

GRIDSERVE has announced plans to revolutionise EV charging infrastructure as it launched the GRIDSERVE Electric Highway – a network of more than 50 high power ‘Electric Hubs’ with 6-12 x 350kW chargers in each, plus almost 300 rapid chargers installed across 85% of the UK’s motorway service stations, and more than a 100 GRIDSERVE Electric Forecourts® in development.

The overall objective is to a UK-wide network that people can rely on, without range or charging anxiety, wherever they live in the UK, and whatever type of electric vehicle they drive. The news comes just weeks after the acquisition of the Electric Highway from Ecotricity.

Electric Highway

In just six weeks since acquiring the Electric Highway, GRIDSERVE has installed new 60kW+ chargers at over 50 locations – from Land’s End to John O’Groats – a rate of around 2 new charging locations every day. The entire network of almost 300 old Ecotricity chargers at more than 150 locations on motorways and IKEA stores is on track to be replaced by September, enabling any type of EV to charge with contactless payment options, and doubling the number of simultaneous charging sessions by offering dual charging from single chargers.

Electric hubs

In addition, more than 50 high-powered ‘Electric Hubs’, featuring 6-12 x 350kW chargers capable of adding 100 miles of range in just 5 minutes, will be delivered at motorway sites across the UK, a programme that will see an additional investment, expected to exceed £100m. GRIDSERVE Electric Highway’s first Motorway Electric Hub – a bank of 12 high power 350kW GRIDSERVE Electric Highway chargers alongside 12 x Tesla Superchargers was opened to the public in April at Rugby Services and is the UK’s largest high power motorway charging site. It will act as a blueprint for all future sites, with more than 10 new Electric Hubs, each featuring 6-12 high power 350kW chargers per location, expected to be completed this year – starting with motorways services deployments in Reading (East and West), Thurrock, and Exeter, and Cornwall Services.

New investor

Funding to achieve GRIDSERVE’s ambitions is being supported by a new investor in GRIDSERVE, The Rise Fund, TPG’s global impact investing platform. The investment in GRIDSERVE sits alongside GRIDSERVE’s existing shareholder Hitachi Capital (UK) PLC, and enables GRIDSERVE to accelerate its purpose of helping to deliver sustainable energy at a scale needed to move the needle on climate change. With more than $5.5 billion in assets under management across its platform, The Rise Fund works with growth-stage, high potential, mission-driven companies that have the power to change the world and help achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Fast and anxiety free

“We are excited to partner with GRIDSERVE in helping to make EV charging in the UK a fast and anxiety free experience. We view this as critical to enabling the rapid decarbonization of road based transportation, especially for long distance journeys” said Edward Beckley, Partner at TPG and senior member of The Rise Fund’s climate investing team, who added “Decarbonised transport businesses, like GRIDSERVE, are a core pillar of The Rise Fund’s climate investing strategy”.

Including the company’s Electric Forecourt® in Braintree, the GRIDSERVE Electric Highway network already includes more than 150 charging locations, covering 85% of the UK’s motorway network with the capability of charging almost than 400 vehicles simultaneously throughout the UK.

Stable climate

Toddington Harper, CEO of GRIDSERVE, said “I was named after Toddington Services, built almost 60 years ago. In that time, vehicle technology has incrementally improved however still remains noisy, polluting and is ultimately detrimental to a stable climate. Now, in just a few years, we will see one of the most rapid and far-reaching revolutions in the history of transport. I’m proud to stand here today, launching the GRIDSERVE Electric Highway charging network that will help to deliver that exciting future – given my name, perhaps this is a job I was destined to do!”

Sustainable energy

“GRIDSERVE’s purpose is to deliver sustainable energy and move the needle on climate change, and the GRIDSERVE Electric Highway – a network of easy-to-use, reliable, rapid and high power chargers right across the UK – is doing just that, eliminating charging anxiety and making driving electric an enjoyable, ultra-convenient and stress-free experience. We’re working at a phenomenal pace to rollout cutting-edge charging infrastructure and will continue to move heaven and earth to install new chargers en-masse in as many locations as we can, and as quickly as possible.”

Price per kWh

To support continuity and transparency for EV drivers, all sites will continue to charge on a price per kWh of energy used basis. The price to charge at Electric Hubs is 30p per kW – enabling a typical EV to add 200 miles of range for as little as £15, and £24p/kWh at Electric Forecourts®, so just £12. GRIDSERVE has also developed a new Interactive Map to make journey planning as seamless as possible. The map will include the location of each Electric Hub or Electric Forecourt®; the charging connectors in each location; whether chargers are in use or available; and details about the facilities on offer in each location. GRIDSERVE chargers are also being integrated with third party services, including Zap-Map – the UK’s leading charge point mapping service – to help all drivers access information on chargers as easily and as quickly as possible.

24/7 phone support is also available to support all chargers and GRIDSERVE has published a Customer Charter which commits the GRIDSERVE Electric Highway to being: Greener, Responsive, Inclusive, Dependable, Safer, Everywhere, Revolutionary, Value, Experience.

Net zero carbon

The GRIDSERVE Electric Highway is just one part of a wider drive by the company to unlock net zero carbon EV driving across the UK.

All chargers operated by GRIDSERVE are supported by net zero solar energy delivered by its ‘sun-to-wheel’ infrastructure – a network of grid-scale hybrid solar farms which ensure that every kW taken from the grid by EV charging infrastructure is netted off against zero-carbon kW’s of solar energy put back into the grid.

In partnership with Hitachi Capital (UK) PLC, the company also offers GRIDSERVE Electric Vehicle Solutions, the UK’s first net zero carbon EV leasing business. The net zero carbon energy delivered at GRIDSERVE’s charging points can be included in monthly leasing payments, meaning drivers can charge at any GRIDSERVE Electric Highway charger without paying additional monthly costs for energy. This removes a key barrier to mass EV adoption, enabling people to accurately compare the cost of leasing a petrol or diesel vehicle, plus fuel, with an EV with energy included. This reflects the true overall cost to the consumer – which in most cases clearly demonstrates a lower cost for EVs than petrol or diesel vehicles – and is particularly useful for the >40% of people without access to off-street parking.

Autocharge technology

Those leasing an EV through GRIDSERVE will also soon benefit from Autocharge technology, being introduced at all GRIDSERVE Electric Highway chargers in the near future. By using the feature, drivers can plug in any type of EV with a CCS connector and the charging session will immediately start, without needing to swipe a contactless payment, or use an RFID card, further simplifying the process. This will be rolled out across the network with the launch of GRIDSERVE’s new App, which is in the final stages of testing.

GRIDSERVE also works with a tree planting organisation which plants 100 trees for every EV leased through the service. 10,000 trees are now in the process of being planted since the electric vehicle leasing business was launched in December.
