Batches of two types of Dolmio pasta sauces have been issued with an urgent allergy alert.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said the batches may contain soya that isn’t mentioned on the label, and that could make them unsafe for customers with soya allergies.

The popular range of pasta sauces are sold in thousands of stores across the country.

Certain batches of the Dolmio Carbonara Pasta Sauce pouches and Dolmio Carbonara Stir-In Pasta Sauce are impacted.

The batches are 150g in size with codes 209A9WE, 209B92WE, 213A9KLN45 and 213B9KLN45 and respective best before dates of 28.02.2023, 01.03.2023, 26.04.2023 and 27.04.2023.

The above batches are under the allergy alert

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said: “This may make the affected batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of soybeans.”

People who have purchased the Carbonara pasta sauces should take appropriate action if they have a soybean intolerance or allergy.

Meanwhile, Spar is recalling batches of its chocolate spread over allergy concerns.

The Spar Spread Up Hazelnut Choco product contains almonds which are not mentioned on the label.
This may be a health concern for customers who are allergic or intolerant to nuts.

The recall concerns products in the pack size 400g, all batches with best before end dates of June 2022, August 2022, September 2022, November 2022 and December 2022.

A warning from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland said: “SPAR is recalling the above batches of SPAR Spread Up Hazelnut Choco because it contains nuts (almonds) which are not mentioned on the label.

“This may make the affected batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of nuts (almonds).”

Meanwhile, two products have been pulled from Lidl shelves after gluten was discovered in products marked gluten-free.

The affected batch could cause major health problems for anyone with a gluten allergy who consumes the product.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued the advisory about a batch of Just Free Gluten Free Puddings.

Gluten was detected in a batch of both the white and black pudding range.

The implicated batch numbers are 041-22 with use by dates of 20/05/2022.

Nora O’Malley, from Carraroe, Co. Galway, has been named Aramark Ireland’s Healthcare Chef of the Year 2022.

In total, six of Aramark’s finest healthcare chefs competed against each other in a thrilling live cook off, which took place in the Unilver Chefmanship Centre in Dublin. The finalists included Roman Borowski, Mayo University Hospital, Himat Singh, Atlantic Technical University, Nora O’Malley, Áras Ronáin Inishmore, Antonia Ciera Ramos, University Hospital Galway, Krzysztof Stefanski and Elizabeth Olusona, both from Royal Hospital Donnybrook.

To mark Coeliac Awareness Week which takes place, from the 9-15th May, the finalists were challenged to prepare, cook and present two portions of a gluten-free dish. The winning dish, created by Nora O’Malley was a Deconstructed Mikado, consisting of a coconut crumb, a raspberry marshmallow, and a raspberry gel.

The judging panel was made up of three judges – Derek Reilly, Culinary Director for Aramark, Frances Buckley, from the Coeliac Society of Ireland, and the lead judge was Audrey Crone, Executive Chef at Unilver Food Solutions.

Nora O’Malley, Chef at Áras Ronáin Inishmore, commented on her win: “I am thrilled to have been named Aramark’s Healthcare Chef of the Year 2022. This is the first culinary competition I have ever taken part in, so to come away with a win is a proud moment for me. I’d like to congratulate my fellow competitors, who cooked amazing dishes on the day.  A very big thank you to the whole Aramark team for organising a great event.”

Derek Reilly, Culinary Director for Aramark commented: “This year our Healthcare Chef of the Year Competition coincided with Coeliac Awareness Week in Ireland, which was a big influence in deciding the competition rules. Our Healthcare chefs are regularly required to modify their dishes to specific dietary requirements, so we thought this competition was the perfect opportunity for our finalists to put these skills to the test.

“I am extremely proud of all the finalists who showed a real passion, enthusiasm, and energy during the final, while also demonstrating diligence in their stringent hygiene practices. I’d like to thank Unilever Food Solutions and the Coeliac Society of Ireland for their involvement, and a special thanks to Frances and Audrey for joining us on the day to judge the dishes.”
