Maxol has opened the first dedicated ultra rapid EV hub in Northern Ireland at the newly expanded Kinnegar Service Station in Holywood.

The hub features four high-powered rapid and ultra-rapid chargers including a 200kw charge point that can charge a single vehicle in as little as 15 minutes. There are a further two 150kw charge points that service four vehicles at any one time and a single 50KW rapid charge point. Up to six vehicles can be charged at one time and the chargers are powered using renewable electricity.

Brian Donaldson, chief executive of The Maxol Group, said: “This is a landmark moment for Maxol and for Northern Ireland. Maxol has delivered the first dedicated ultra rapid EV charging hub in Northern Ireland – to build upon the charging points we already have in place at Townparks in Antrim, Mallusk in Belfast and later this month we will unveil another charge point at our newly refurbished site at Edenderry.

“Maxol continues to invest in and develop the right infrastructure across our service station network to support the move to electric. At all these developments we worked closely with the team in NI Electric Networks to provide the necessary grid capacity to power the chargers and additional requirements for each location.”

The sustainably designed new flagship development, which is part of a broader five-year investment programme has used cutting-edge technology to create a measurably different service station that will enable Maxol to reduce the site’s existing carbon footprint by up to 40%.

Parking has more than doubled in capacity to 41 spaces, to ease the flow of traffic on site even during peak trading periods.

Kinnegar’s retail space has almost doubled in size with the opening of a brand new Eurospar that offers a range of locally produced food including an expanded grocery offer, a large butchery section as well as a choice offering of fruit & veg, dairy, and frozen food ranges.

Mark McCammond, retail director of Henderson Retail, licensee for Maxol said: “The completion of the Kinnegar site brings a premium offering for the local area with our exclusive Delish food to go brand serving the high level of passing trade, complemented by bays of fresh, locally sourced products and our own brand ranges that can be picked up for tonight’s tea.

“This is a one-stop-shop and supermarket experience for the local community that has been built with their needs as a top priority.”

A total of 20 new jobs have been created for the local community as a result of the expansion and development.

Brian Donaldson, chief executive of The Maxol Group, added: “This site marks an important step on our journey towards being a more sustainable business. The technologies and innovations we have used here are creating a blueprint that we will apply across our network in larger type locations to deliver a positive change for our customers, the environment, and our industry and that is a very exciting journey to be on.”

Belfast-based Petroleum Installation Solutions (PIS) Ireland has been acquired by the LCM Environmental Group for a seven figure sum.

Set up in 2012, PIS specialise in forecourt installation. Its clients include Maxol, Applegreen, Texaco, Topaz and Solo.

Its new owner, Lancashire-based LCM fuel, has been involved in the fuel, energy and infrastructure sector for 35 years.

The company said PIS Ireland will benefit from new business opportunities, an expanded fleet, and wider petrochemical services for the British market.

General manager of the Belfast firm, Colin Doyle, said the two businesses complement each other well.

“Since we established PIS Ireland in 2012, the company has gained a prominent reputation within our sector, and we have formed strong relationships with a multitude of clients across Ireland and the UK,” he said.

“As such, we are now in an excellent position to achieve considerable further expansion alongside the LCM team.”

LCM is headed by Belfast-born chief executive Richard Wallace.

“It has been a long-term goal of LCM Environmental to acquire an Irish base and expand overseas,” he said.

“We are happy to announce that this is now a reality, and we look forward to integrating PIS (Ireland) within the company.

“PIS Ireland has accomplished significant growth over the past 10 years and has taken over a big share of the retail and commercial market throughout the island of Ireland and completed fuel management and forecourt installations in England.

“They have shown remarkable skill sets and determination in developing their business and upskilling their workforce. Becoming a part of the LCM group was the logical next step in their expansion plans – and one that has been completed successfully in a seven-figure deal.”

He added: “After several acquisitions, the start of the new LCM Group marks a new beginning for us and as a business, we are more determined than ever to keep growing within the industry and reach new heights in the coming months.”

The acquisition was facilitated by SCC Accountants (Sean Cavanagh and Kathy Daly) and O’Reilly and Stewart Solicitors (Seamus McGranaghan and Conor Cleverley).

Staff and customers from leading Irish convenience retailer Centra have raised €57,492 in support of the Irish Cancer Society’s 2022 Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.

For the 13th year, Centra has partnered with the Irish Cancer Society to help support breast cancer patients and their families in communities across Ireland. Continuing on the success of last years ‘Care For Your Pair’ campaign, this year’s contributions were raised as a result of combined efforts by communities and Centra stores nationwide.

This year, 292 Centra stores across Ireland participated in a variety of fundraising activities such as an in-store tap to donate initiative, cake sales, community walks as well as highlighting the importance of early detection of breast cancer in stores and across social media.

Speaking about the fundraiser, Ian Allen, Managing Director, Centra said; “We are delighted to support the Irish Cancer Society for over a decade now and each year, we are blown away by the combined efforts from our Centra retailers stores and customers in the surrounding communities.

“The funds raised will positively impact people across Ireland effected by breast cancer and we are extremely proud to partner with this charity”.

All donations raised will go directly to the Irish Cancer Society and will contribute towards helping to fund life-changing cancer research and support services, such as the Irish Cancer Society’s Support Line, Night Nursing Service, Volunteer Driver Service and free counselling.

Rosemary Simmons, Head of Fundraising at the Irish Cancer Society said; “The Irish Cancer Society is delighted to mark the 13th year of our partnership with Centra.

“The outpouring of support from staff and customers in Centra stores across Ireland has been incredible. Each year we are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm which is displayed throughout the partnership. Our Support Line is also available on 1800 200 700 where our expert cancer nurses are available to chat about any issue big or small when it comes to breast health and breast cancer.”

Fast food outlet, LEON, is to more than double its self-serve coffee kiosks in the UK to in excess of 200 before the end of January.

The business is owned by Blackburn-based petrol forecourts and retail operator EG Group, whose founders, brothers Zuber and Mohsin Issa, also own a stake in the Yorkshire-based Asda supermarket chain.

More than 100 self-serve coffee kiosks will launch in Asda by the end of January, while an extra four kiosks will launch at EG service stations before the end of the year.

LEON currently has coffee kiosks in 65 of EG’s convenience stores and 33 Asda stores

Its roll-out plans reflect the growing popularity of its organic and Fairtrade coffee and how busy consumers increasingly want it on the move.

Glenn Edwards, managing director of LEON, said: “Today’s announcement marks another milestone in our expansion programme – and shows how Leon’s coffee is fast becoming a favourite with coffee drinkers across the UK. We continue to invest and innovate, with the intention to make Leon more accessible to more customers.”

Last year the Issa brothers acquired Leon for £100 million.

Go forecourts across Northern Ireland saw huge queues as they rolled out their ‘Thanksgiving Thursday’ deal.

The fuel company announced that for one day only it would be charging 1.31.9p per litre of petrol and 1.55.9p per litre of diesel.

There were reports of large queues and gridlock traffic in Crumlin caused by the garage’s offer.

This marks a significant decrease in fuel prices in recent months. According to data published by Statista, diesel was the most expensive conventional motor fuel in Northern Ireland in September 2022, at an average of 178.6 pence per litre.

Go garages operate a ‘self-pump’ format with customers having to pay by card prior to pumping their car.

They made the announcement on social media, but have stressed the American Thanksgiving-themed offer only applies to certain locations in Northern Ireland.

Customers were able to receive the deal at their garages in Portadown, Carrickfergus, Cookstown, Crumlin, Yorkgate, Great Victoria Street, Grand Parade, Twin Spires, Crewcatt, Ballynahinch, Dunman Cookstown, A1 Banbridge, Mallusk, Armagh, Moyola, Cameron Stewarts Cookstown, Lissan, Moscow Road, Landscape Crumlin Road, St. Marys Road Liverpool, LCC Oil Ballymena and  Antrim Road Service Station Belfast.

The deal ran from 7am-7pm and only applied to one transaction per customer and only to vehicles, with no tanks or fuel cans allowed.
