Staff and customers from leading Irish convenience retailer Centra have raised €57,492 in support of the Irish Cancer Society’s 2022 Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.

For the 13th year, Centra has partnered with the Irish Cancer Society to help support breast cancer patients and their families in communities across Ireland. Continuing on the success of last years ‘Care For Your Pair’ campaign, this year’s contributions were raised as a result of combined efforts by communities and Centra stores nationwide.

This year, 292 Centra stores across Ireland participated in a variety of fundraising activities such as an in-store tap to donate initiative, cake sales, community walks as well as highlighting the importance of early detection of breast cancer in stores and across social media.

Speaking about the fundraiser, Ian Allen, Managing Director, Centra said; “We are delighted to support the Irish Cancer Society for over a decade now and each year, we are blown away by the combined efforts from our Centra retailers stores and customers in the surrounding communities.

“The funds raised will positively impact people across Ireland effected by breast cancer and we are extremely proud to partner with this charity”.

All donations raised will go directly to the Irish Cancer Society and will contribute towards helping to fund life-changing cancer research and support services, such as the Irish Cancer Society’s Support Line, Night Nursing Service, Volunteer Driver Service and free counselling.

Rosemary Simmons, Head of Fundraising at the Irish Cancer Society said; “The Irish Cancer Society is delighted to mark the 13th year of our partnership with Centra.

“The outpouring of support from staff and customers in Centra stores across Ireland has been incredible. Each year we are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm which is displayed throughout the partnership. The funds raised this year will play a vital role in providing free support services and care to people affected by breast cancer while also helping to develop ground-breaking breast cancer research.

“When it comes to breast cancer early detection can save lives and we encourage anyone who has a concern to contact a GP. Our Support Line is also available on 1800 200 700 where our expert cancer nurses are available to chat about any issue big or small when it comes to breast health and breast cancer.”

The teams from Lynch’s SPAR and EUROSPAR stores and supermarkets in the Derry and Mid Ulster areas held Community Coffee Mornings for their shoppers recently, collectively raising over £10,000 for Cancer Fund for Children.

The annual Community Coffee Morning is held in a number of EUROSPAR and ViVOXTRA stores across the country in partnership with Cancer Fund for Children, a partnership which began in 2011.

This year, the coffee mornings kicked off September’s Childhood Awareness Month, welcoming shoppers to enjoy coffee, tea and sweet treats for a donation towards the charity, all while raising awareness for this special month.

Lynch’s supermarkets are at the heart of their communities, and store teams engaged with shoppers throughout the day with various activities. EUROSPAR Draperstown, EUROSPAR Skeoge, SPAR Trench Road and EUROSPAR Greysteel, all went the extra mile to bring exciting additions to the traditional community coffee mornings, including a £100 voucher giveaway for one lucky shopper.

Derry GAA star Benny Herron showed his support at EUROSPAR Draperstown, meeting the customers and signing jerseys, and at EUROSPAR Skeoge, customers were lucky enough to get a performance from the Harkin-McGinley Academy of Irish Dance, getting everyone involved, including some of the store’s team members.

It was the first time holding a Community Coffee Morning for SPAR Trench Road and EUROSPAR Greysteel, which opened at the end of 2021. The Greysteel store held exciting competitions for shoppers to mark the occasion, and the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Sandra Duffy, called into the Trench Road store to get involved and show support.

Conor Lynch, Store Owner, commented, “We are delighted with how much the stores have been able to raise and so grateful for the support of all those who attended, but the standout stars are our staff, who really get behind the event every year and engage with the customers.”

Alex Murdock, Corporate Fundraiser at Cancer Fund for Children commented, “This is an incredible donation, and we want to send a huge thank you to everyone involved for putting so much effort into their fundraising.”

EUROSPAR Supermarkets all over Ireland have come together to say thank you to those who go above and beyond to help the people of their local communities.

The EUROSPAR supermarkets are asking their customers to nominate a local charity, group or organisation and explain how they go the extra mile for their community to be in with a chance of winning €1,000 for the nominated group.

Commenting, Malachy Hanberry, EUROSPAR Managing Director said: “I am delighted to launch such a worthwhile initiative for the communities our EUROSPAR Supermarkets serve. We are inviting our customers to nominate a group or organisation that regularly goes that extra mile for their community and enter them for their chance to win. It is a meaningful way for us to recognise what all these people do for their communities and to celebrate just how important they are to their local areas.”

The campaign will run in-store until Wednesday, October 19, and customers to the EUROSPAR Supermarkets will be asked to pick up an application form in their local EUROSPAR Supereasy Supermarket and nominate their preferred local charity, group or organisation. More than 80 motorcycles gathered at Inver Slieverue Service Station on Saturday July 23 to begin their annual Kenny and Wayne Memorial Bike Run.

The run is in memory of two brothers, Wayne and Kenny Scannell, who tragically passed away within years of each other. Since its inception, the event has proved hugely successful in raising a substantial amount of money for organisations that need extra support like Waterford City River Rescue and the paediatric ward at University Hospital Waterford.

This year the Scannell family decided to fundraise in aid of Blood Bikes South East. Established in 2020, Blood Bikes South East directly serves hospitals and communities across the South East and links up with other blood bike groups to provide a completely FREE nationwide service, which benefits hospitals, laboratories, nursing homes, patients, and their families.

They transport many urgent medical items such as blood products, medical samples, medical records, scans, x-rays, test results, medicines, and medical devices. Blood Bikes South East is a 100% volunteer run, no one is paid for their service and all funds raised go directly into the service they provide to the community.

To mark this exciting event, Inver Slieverue Junction presented Blood Bikes South East with a €1,000 Leading Lights donation.

Leading Lights is Inver’s unique initiative where each Inver Service Station has the opportunity to support and recognise organisations and charities that put an effort and time into making their communities a better place. Through this programme, Inver is committed to making a positive and long-lasting contribution to people’s lives.

This donation fits seamlessly with Inver’s ethos of supporting local communities, families, and education.

Store manager Sean said: “Blood Bikes South East is a truly inspiring voluntary organisation providing out-of-hours runs to ensure that those who need help can get it at any time.”

Inver would like to thank the Scannell family for organising such an amazing event and everyone who supported this fantastic fundraiser.
