Aldi has announced a new £5 million deal with the Armagh-based oats producer White’s Oats which will see the company supplying Aldi’s 149 Irish stores with its oats.

The two-year contract extension will see a range of new products being developed for Aldi Ireland in the coming year. The oats producer also supplies Aldi UK and currently has a £4.3m contract in place with its UK stores.

White’s Oats is Ireland’s largest oat miller and breakfast cereal producer, working with 100 Irish and 35 British farmers to make a variety of oats and porridge products. The company has partnered with the supermarket for the past 12 years.

Established in 1841 in Tandragee, White’s pioneered the first rolled packaged oat flake. Today, White’s employs 66 people and produces 1.4 million bowls of porridge daily from its oat mill.

Aldi group buying director, John Curtin, said: “White’s Oats has been a long-term partner with Aldi for the last number of years, and we’re delighted to continue this strong relationship into the future. We’re excited to work on new product development with the team over the coming year, and to provide Aldi customers with even more delicious products.”

Mark Gowdy, commercial director of White’s, added: “Everyone at White’s Oats is delighted with the announcement to continue supplying Aldi Ireland with a range of traditional and instant porridge oat products into the future. Aldi’s support over the past 12 years has allowed our business to expand and flourish and for that we are truly appreciative. This partnership has allowed us deliver award winning and sustainable products that continue to experience strong growth.”

Aldi has announced that it will create 600 new jobs across the country this year.

The supermarket says has committed to a €320 million three-year (2022-2024) investment programme that will see it open a further 30 new stores across the country.

The news follows the supermarket chain’s recent opening of its new Co.Kildare-based corporate office.

Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar TD, officially opened Aldi Ireland’s new Birch House, Millennium Park facility, Naas which will house Aldi’s National Buying and Marketing teams.

“This is more fantastic news from Aldi, another 600 new jobs being created, in addition to the 1,050 added last year,” he said.

“This is a real testament to Aldi’s commitment to Ireland and the hard work of its existing team here.”

Aldi’s workforce has now grown to over 4,650 staff, supporting 149 Irish stores.

The company now works with more than 330 Irish food and drink producers, spending over €1 billion with Irish producers in 2021, an increase of almost 20% on 2020, including €250 million on Irish food and drink during the busy Christmas trading period.

Niall O’Connor, group managing director, Aldi Ireland said: “This is a hugely exciting move for our National Buying and Marketing teams and reflects our ongoing commitment to partnering with more great Irish food and drink producers.”

“The new facility features our ‘Taste Kitchen’, a state-of-the-art development kitchen where our Buying team will be able to create and test new Irish products, helping us maintain our leading position as a retailer of Irish products.”

Aldi confirmed it will recruit 600 new store employees this year, with employment opportunities at Store Assistant, Assistant Store Manager and Store Manager levels across the country.

Aldi Ireland plans to create 25 new permanent jobs in Kanturk in Co Cork when it opens a new store in the town.

Cork County Council has granted Aldi planning permission to build a new store on Percival Street, near the town centre of Kanturk.

Expected to open in late 2023, the new store will see an investment of €7m in the local area. Eighty jobs will also be created during the construction phase of the new shop.

The new store will be Aldi’s 25th in the county of Cork.

The supermarket chain this year submitted planning applications for a Clonakilty store, which is due to open in late 2022, and a new store on Skehard Road, Blackrock, which is planned to open in 2024.

Last year, it sourced €68.5m of locally produced food and drink from Co Cork based suppliers.

Aldi Ireland has unveiled plans to invest €320m from 2022 to 2024 as it opens 30 new stores across the country.
The supermarket chain said its profit before tax came to €71.2m in 2020, a jump of 46% on the figure for the previous year, while its turnover for the year grew by 14% to €2 billion from €1.74 billion in 2019.
Aldi Ireland also said it would invest €320m from 2022 to 2024 as it plans to open 30 new stores across the country. It already has 149 stores nationwide.

It marks the first time the German owned retailer has announced financial results for its Irish operations.

Aldi Ireland said it plans to increase its investment in Ireland by more than 75% over the next three years compared to 2019-2021.

New Aldi stores are set to open in Cahersiveen in Co Kerry, Ballina in Co Mayo, Clonakilty in Co Cork, Castlecomer in Co Kilkenny, Ardee in Co Louth and Athenry and Tuam in Co Galway next year.

The company held 11.2% of the Irish grocery market at the end of 2020, according to Kantar. Its market share growth has continued into 2021 with the company’s market share now standing at 12.7%.

Aldi Ireland added 484 people to its workforce in 2020, growing its team to 4,460, and  said it paid €149m in wages and salaries in 2020, 14% more than 2019.

Niall O’Connor, Group Managing Director at Aldi Ireland, said its latest investment builds on the €1.6 billion it has already invested in Ireland and is a clear sign of its ambition, and the demand that exists for Aldi to be in more locations across Ireland.

“It’s also great news for Irish food and drink producers, who will have more opportunity to trade with Aldi. We will spend over €1 billion with Irish producers this year, an increase of almost 20% on 2020,” Mr O’Connor said.
